Gucci is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable names in luxury fashion. Its roots date back to 1921, when the house was established by Guccio Gucci selling travel goods. The Italian founder had worked at the Savoy hotel in London, coming to understand the preferences of high society in terms of fashion and travel. Soon after, Guccio Gucci worked for the European rail company, the Compagnie des Wagons-Lits, gaining further insight into the tastes of the upper classes. With this experience, Guccio Gucci was able to open his first store in Florence, Italy, in 1921, selling imported leather luggage. A small workshop was created for local artisans to produce leather goods for the label, soon growing in size and number of employees as the brand rapidly expanded.
In 1937, Gucci launched handbags for the first time, and by 1953 the house had opened stores in the USA, with boutiques in London and France following swiftly. Gucci’s sons worked for the label, and Aldo Gucci is known for his work in expanding the business worldwide. Gucci soon became a world-renowned fashion house, with their designs worn by the likes of Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco. After Jackie Kennedy had been spotted sporting a Gucci bag, this particular model became known as The Jackie, an iconic style to this day. Other signature and important designs include the double-G logo, the bamboo bag, Flora print and the classic red and green stripe.
Today, Gucci is seen as stronger than ever under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele since 2015 and under ownership of Kering. Gucci has always represented opulent, Italian craftsmanship and attention to detail, which Michele continues to uphold. The Creative Director produces a decadent, maximalist aesthetic which is influenced by the heritage of the house and incorporates many of the brand’s most iconic styles and elements into modern collections. From ready-to-wear for men, women and children to bags, accessories and shoes, an extravagant air of luxury is produced. The label draws inspiration from vintage and theatrical styles, culminating in lavish prints, classic shapes and kitsch elements. With imagination and boldness at the centre of design, Gucci continues to stand as an innovative figurehead for modern fashion.
Gucci stores can be found across the world, from London to Madrid to Istanbul. Their collections can also be accessed online through the brand’s online store and Matches Fashion, Flannels and Net-a-Porter.
