As one of the most iconic and internationally renowned brands of all time, Nike is currently the largest supplier of sports shoes and apparel in the world. This esteemed brand began in 1964 when Phil Knight, a track athlete for the University of Oregon and his coach Bill Bowerman founded the company which was originally titled Blue Ribbon Sports. Under this name, the company purchased and sold shoes from the Japanese brand Onitsuka Tiger, until 1971 when Blue Ribbon Sports looked to produce their own footwear line. In the same year, the label was renamed to Nike, titled after the Greek Goddess of victory, and given the signature Swoosh logo, designed by Carolyn Davidson.
Over the next few years, Nike expanded their product ranges and also began to sell their collections abroad, soon becoming the immense label which we know today. Nike stands as an industry leader not only in sports apparel, but also in street fashion. Their instantly recognisable logo and ‘Just Do It’ slogan are synonymous with modern streetwear, and have come to play a huge role in contemporary fashion.
Within the company are many lines, representing sportswear and fashion ranges, including titles such as Nike Golf, Nike Pro and Air Jordan. Sports styles are renowned for their consistent use of innovative technology, creating trusted, high-performance apparel. Celebrity endorsements and ad campaigns have solidified the brand as one which empowers those to take part in sports, and celebrates sport itself.
Aside from performance and activewear, Nike offers wardrobe staples such as hoodies, t-shirts and tracksuits, as well as covetable and essential trainers. From vibrant colours to muted tones, Nike clothing often features bold logos and emphasises a modern, streetwear aesthetic. Known for their iconic casual wear, Nike is a go-to for everyday designs for men, women and children.
Nike stores are found across the world, in their own stores as well as through other retailers. Their collections are widely available online, through the brand’s own site, and through other stockists such as Farfetch, ASOS and Selfridges.
