Jil Sander launched her eponymous luxury fashion house in 1968 in Germany, with headquarters now in Milan. Starting with a womenswear line in 1973, the brand expanded into menswear in 1997. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, the brand prospered internationally. Prada bought the majority shares in Jil Sander in 1999, resulting in Sander herself leaving the company a few months later. In 2008, Onward Holdings Co. Ltd purchased the brand, and husband and wife duo Lucie and Luke Meier are now Creative Directors. Jil Sander produces menswear, womenswear, accessories, bags and shoes.
‘Jil Sander defines modernity and sophistication through its unconditional dedication to contemporary design’
The core of the Jil Sander brand is a less is more approach. This has remained the case throughout its various designers, and Lucie and Luke Meier continue to honour this style. The effect of minimalism is produced through the use of sleek silhouettes and calm colour palettes with the occasional pop of colour. Luxurious fabrics and neat tailoring are complimented by a sharp attention to detail. The collections feature androdgynous shapes in their dresses and jackets for women, while their trousers are expertly cut. Mens shirts are adapted to look modern and interesting while remaining refined and neat. The overall effect is a polished and laid back feel, effortless whilst tasteful.
Jill Sander has stores across the globe, in cities such as Moscow, Milan, Hamburg and Beijing. Their online store, as well as Farfetch, Harvey Nichols, and My Theresa stock Jil Sander pieces.
