John Smedley

John Smedley was founded in 1784 by Peter Nightingale and John Smedley in Lea Mills, Derbyshire. Originally producing muslin, the company expanded into knitting and hosiery by the end of the 18th century, continuing to modernise and innovate with every decade. John Smedley was now running the business alone, but always with his family beside him. The 1960’s saw the development of John Smedley’s signature sweater line, bringing with it more prosperity for the brand and overseas expansion. With such strong heritage behind the brand, John Smedley is now the ‘leader in the production of fine gauge knitwear products’. This notion is solidified by the Royal Warrant of Appointment as a ‘Manufacturer of Fine Knitwear’ in 2013 by Queen Elizabeth II. The history of the brand is honoured today, with each piece still being created in the same English mill as the first of their kind were, by skilled British craftsmen.
