JW Anderson began as a menswear label, founded by Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson. Launched in London in 2008, the label was well received, leading to the introduction of womenswear in 2010. The brand became more widely recognised after a 2012 collaboration with Topshop, which produced limited edition clothing and accessories that proved an instant hit. JW Anderson has continued to go from strength to strength, now producing menswear, womenswear, bags and accessories.
The label has become known for its blurring of gender expectations, fusing the feminine and the masculine expertly. Modern and intriguing, JW Anderson reinterprets gender by pushing the boundaries between menswear and womenswear, through colour, print and cut. Traditional silhouettes are newly imagined, seen in oversize shapes and exaggerated elements. Though innovative and fresh, JW Anderson remains polished and luxurious, using opulent fabrics and decadent prints throughout collections. Simplistic designs are given interest with layered materials and asymmetric hems, from jumpers to dresses to shirts. For men and women, staple knitwear is given a playful edge with bold colour and print, representing JW Anderson’s ability to reimagine any wardrobe staple.
A 2021 collaboration with Uniqlo sees JW Anderson bring heirloom tradition seen throughout his own designs to the understated style of Uniqlo. This whimsical collection features embroidery, florals and calm colour palettes, inspired by Spring and its connotations of hope. This comes at a perfect time after a difficult year for most, looking to the future at better days. Designs are clean and classic, with linen trousers and cotton shirts featuring relaxed fits and embroidered detail.
JW Anderson has stores in London and Seoul. Their designs can also be purchased through their online store, as well as through Farfetch, My Theresa and Selfridges.
