Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo is an eponymous Italian luxury label, originally producing womens footwear. When Salvatore Ferragamo himself moved from Italy to the USA, the foundations for his iconic label began. The young entrepreneur studied anatomy to better understand the foot, allowing him to create the most comfortable designs possible. Upon learning that the arch of the foot is where the weight of the body falls, Ferragamo realised that the traditional method of shoes supporting the heel of the foot was insufficient. With this, he created a patent which supported the arch of the foot throughout all movement. This signified the innovative character of Ferragamo which would become distinctive of his brand.

In 1923, Ferragamo acquired the Hollywood Boot Shop, and began producing shoes for movie stars and for some of the biggest cinematic hits of the time. Clients included Joan Crawford and Gloria Swanson, earning the designer a reputation amongst high profile clientele for his excellent craftsmanship. After a few years, the shoemaker realised the potential of selling his shoes to a wider customer base, and with this, decided to return to Italy to create shoes and distribute them internationally. In 1928, the Salvatore Ferragamo brand was launched to great success, seeing particularly extensive prosperity after World War II. Throughout the 1950’s, the brand was celebrated by some of the biggest names of the time, including Audrey Hepburn. When Salvatore passed away in the 1960’s, his wife Wanda took over the company and expanded the label to encompass eyewear, fragrance, accessories and ready-to-wear. Today, Salvatore Ferragamo continues to offer these lines for both men and women, and the house remains majority owned by the Ferragamo family.

With such a rich heritage in innovation and considered design, Salvatore Ferragamo embodies understated luxury. Footwear from the brand is imbued with decades of expertise and exceptional craftsmanship, meaning that each pair of shoes is produced to the highest standards. Resulting designs are consistently elegant and classic, from sculptural heeled sandals and the iconic wedge heel to classic Italian loafers and contemporary sneakers. Ready-to-wear lines follow the same aesthetic, producing timeless pieces with an artful edge such as sleek blouses, stylish wool coats, sharp suits and logoed t-shirts. From casual wear to stiletto heels, Ferragamo designs represent classic craftsmanship and unparalleled quality.

With stores across the globe, Salvatore Ferragamo collections can also be found online, through the brand’s website and via stockists such as Harrods, Farfetch and Net-a-Porter.
