Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto is a Japanese fashion designer who launched his namesake label in Tokyo in 1977. While pursuing a career in law, Yamamoto realised that this wasn’t the path he wanted to take, so began assisting his mother who ran a dressmaking store. During this time, Yohji Yamamoto learnt his exceptional tailoring skills, for which he is now consistently celebrated for. His main line, the eponymous label, is met with a second line named Y’s, which continues the same spirit as the wider brand.

Producing womenswear, menswear, shoes, bags and accessories, Yohji Yamamoto is known for their avant-garde approach to design, subverting trends and expectations. Signature to the label is an overwhelmingly black colour palette and oversized silhouettes. Interesting and contrasting textures are seen throughout collections, met with expert draping and asymmetric lines. Logoed t-shirts and longline shirts are perfect for the everyday, while deconstructed check trousers, textured blazers and exposed seam dresses add interest to daily uniforms. Contrast stitching and irreverent graphics feature throughout designs, and Yohji Yamamoto infuses his esteemed tailoring into every collection.

Yohji Yamamoto stores are found across the world, in locations such as Tokyo, London and Paris. Their collections are also available through the brand’s online store and via Farfetch
